STEM Library MATH 1403A

Are you ready to prepare clean technical publications without relying on Word? This workshop will introduce participants to the basics of LaTeX (pronounced Lay-tech or Lah-tech), a free document preparation system that is used across a number of technical fields. The LaTeX system is a combination of word processing and coding that results in beautifully formatted technical publications, allowing you to spend your time on your research instead of fighting word processing software.

This workshop is designed for graduate students who are beginners with LaTeX and may have some basic coding experience, but all are welcome. Please bring your own laptop and install LaTeX (or setup your preferred online service) prior to the workshop if possible. See https://www.latex-project.org/get/#tex-distributions to determine what distribution is right for you.

During this workshop, we will discuss: LaTeX basics, why to use it, and where to find information when you have problems. We will also use the article class in LaTeX as an example to demonstrate various features. This workshop will conclude with a hands-on/Q&A session for participants to start using LaTeX on their own. After the workshop participants will be able to:

• Understand why LaTeX is useful for technical fields
• Know when to use it for writing projects
• Create their own article in LaTeX with references
• Know where to find additional information and help
