Workshop on Modeling Techniques for AI-based Risk Analysis, Control, Design, and Diagnosis (MARCD)

Monday, June 1, 2026

Better models to enhance safety reliability , and intelligent decision-making

  • Date: June 1-2, 2026
  • Location: 1101a, A. James Clark Hall, University of Maryland, College Park, MD
  • Hosted by: Center for Risk and Reliability (CRR), University of Maryland & Technical University of Denmark (DTU)

1. About the Workshop [Download Workshop Flyer]

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has created new opportunities and challenges for engineering and system safety. As AI becomes increasingly integrated into decision-making processes, there is a growing need to explore how various modeling techniques—such as functional modeling, logic modeling, probabilistic modeling, physics-based modeling, and agent-based modeling—can support these emerging contexts.

This workshop aims to foster a broader dialogue on how modeling can influence the future of safe, sustainable, and intelligent socio-technical systems by examining the strengths, limitations, and synergies of these approaches.

2. Call for Abstracts & Topics

We invite researchers, engineers, and practitioners to submit abstracts related to the following topics:

  • Modeling Techniques: Presenting models such as functional models, logic models, agent-based models, and Bayesian Networks (BN) in the context of AI systems.
  • Risk Assessment and Safety Analysis: AI-informed or AI-based applications of modeling techniques.
  • Design and Planning: AI-informed reasoning for system design and operational planning.
  • Diagnostics and Prognostics: Applications of modeling techniques to fault detection, root cause analysis, and predictive maintenance.
  • Cross-domain Applications: Case studies in energy, process industry, transport, robotics, and healthcare.

Publication Opportunity: participants will be invited to submit extended papers for publication after the workshop.
