The International System Safety Conference is a platform that is focused on training and educating new System Safety Engineers and Engineers in other disciplines who want to learn some System Safety fundamentals. This year's virtual event took place in November, and was centered on the theme "Optimizing System Safety."

Thomas' presentation focused on the safety of autonomous vehicles in the new era where autonomous technologies are poised to take over the world. His presentation, titled "The Road Ahead: System Safety in an Autonomous World," discussed the challenges facing the system safety profession, including artificial intelligence, agile methods, and others.

Engineers working at the forefront of safety for autonomous vehicles are facing many safety challenges. But Thomas says there's hope, and he called on members of the International System Safety Society to lead the way in assuring system safety for the coming wave of autonomous technologies.

Steven Thomas spent over 20 years as an automation and functional safety engineer in the petroleum and chemical industries, including engineering leadership roles at Chevron and ExxonMobil.
